Gerald Gallant Takes the Helm as Head Coach of the KHL Shanghai Dragons

Gerard Gallant has been appointed as the head coach of the KHL’s Shanghai Dragons, a team that was formerly known as Kunlun Red Star before being rebranded this summer. At 61 years old, Gallant replaces Mikhail Krabetz, who was dismissed after one season. Gallant’s extensive coaching career includes stints with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, and most recently, the New York Rangers. He led the Rangers from 2021 to 2023, guiding them to the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals. However, the team fell short in his second season, losing to the New Jersey Devils in the first playoff round.

Sportsnet’s Elliot Friedman commented on Gallant’s future prospects, noting uncertainty about potential interviews this year but highlighting Gallant’s desire to prove himself beyond his previous roles. This new position with the KHL’s Shanghai Dragons gives Gallant a valuable opportunity to rebuild his reputation and possibly make a return to the NHL someday.

Fan Take: This move is significant for hockey fans as Gallant’s experience and leadership could elevate the Shanghai Dragons and bring more attention to the KHL. It also signals a potential pathway for veteran NHL coaches to reinvent their careers internationally, which could ultimately enrich the global hockey landscape.
