  • This summer, Man Utd’s Wharton hunt
  • Amorim himself could have been a former United star

Manchester United’s academy has produced many top-level talent over the years and is known for helping the club win 13 Premier League titles.

Sir Alex Ferguson is a man who appreciates such glory and can then rely on players who have passed through the ranks of Old Trafford to build successful aspects.

He is well known for merging the ’92 class, and Sexset made over 3,000 appearances on the Red Devils’ first team team.

However, Reuben Amorim’s current first team only includes three academy alumni, the form of Cobbie Mineau, Tom Heaton and Tyler Fredrickson.

The manager also wants to further strengthen his own first team with English quality, as seen in his attempts to land Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton this summer.

This summer, Man Utd’s Wharton hunt

Through the summer transfer window, United have created a Beeline to land a new central midfielder to strengthen the middle of the Amorim side from 2025/26 onwards.

Their pursuit led them to Wharton, England, and even discussed with Oliver Glasner’s side to try to complete the 21-year-old’s signature contract.

However, there was a discussion of a transfer fee of around £100 million for the youth service. This is an incredibly large number, considering that £200 million already lurks in other areas of the team.

Such a move would have been a great move, especially if he could help the Eagles win the FA Cup, if they could replicate his numbers from last season.

Wharton was ranked in the 93rd percentile of progressive passes completed per 90 (7.3) and in the 86th percentile of passes to the final third per 90 (5.3).

Ballplay is clearly his strength, but the former Blackburn Rovers star also shows his incredible ability to get the ball back for his side.

He ranks in the 93rd percentile of recovery per 90 (7.1) and has numerous qualities that improve the Amorim aspect, along with the 81st percentile of intercepts per 90 (1.4).

But Wharton remains a case of what existed, but if he had hugged another young man, they might have had their own version of the superstar.

Amorim himself could have been a former United star

Sales of young people too early have been a problem for United throughout the recent season, as seen in the decision to offload Anthony Elanga to Nottingham Forest in 2023.

The Red Devils parted ways with the Swedes for just £15 million, allowing the winger to acquire valuable game time. He then scored 11 goals and 21 assists in his two years at City Ground.

With such figures, he moved £60 million to Newcastle United this summer – leaving four times as many Reds as he paid for his signature just two years ago.

Another similar scenario was able to raise the head again in the future after Amorim’s side agreed to sell 18-year-old midfielder Zach Bauman to Norwich City on the deadline.

The deal left the Ukrainian youth on a free transfer, but includes future provisions that allow the Red Devils to make some money for his signature.

He has been a regular at United’s various youth levels over the past few years, with him scoring once and registering five assists in five different competitions, including the Under-18 Premier League.

Also labelled “exceptional” by one analyst, Baumann elicited a comparison with Wharton by Nathan Salt, Manchester United correspondent for the Daily Mail.

He argues that what teenagers often own, offers a constructed head – as the recent Palace stars have, can choose a forward pass.

Such talent is evident to the Red Devils youth team these days, and has produced a number of incredible passes that have contributed to his impressive assist tally.

Another analyst previously touched his impressive nature with the ball on his feet – the Red Devils are clearly making a big mistake in allowing teenagers to leave Old Trafford.

Given his tender age, Bauman still has a long way to go before he can approach the level Wharton produced within the UK’s top flights.

However, his recent departure could be that a major mistake is on track, and fans may need to leave the theatre of their dreams and see another talent thriving.
