Before Thursday, Igaświątek’s failure to advance beyond the second round in 2019 was unable to keep that streak intact despite being pushed hard by Suzan Ramens.

świątek was pushed to the limits on Thursday by Lamens and narrowly won the US Open Second Round Match 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

It looked like Schwitzk would cruise to win quickly and easily. świątek dominated in the first set, winning nine winners and two aces 6-1. However, some misplays sunk świątek in the second set. Two double faults and 12 forced errors proved to be to win the second set 6-4 and force the third set.

After jumping into the early lead in the final set, świątek allowed Ramen to return to the match. Lamens went back to the third set and cut świątek’s lead to 5-4 for a short time before finally cleaning up Lamens at 6-4.

Lamens fought back in the match, but the third set proved to be świątek’s best. She picked up four aces and committed seven forced errors in the final set. It was the only set where świątek had fewer errors than Lamen.

Had Schwitzk been lost, he would have marked the exit for her early Grand Slams since her loss in the second round of the US Open in 2019. świątek, who was competing in an event for the first time in her career, was eliminated in 2019 by Anastasija Sevastova.

After that loss, świątek blossomed into one of the best players in the sport. After advancing to the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2020, świątek won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open in a few months’ Ruster. We played deep races in each Grand Slam in 2021, but did not win. However, since then, she has won five grand slams.

That excellence has resulted in świątek being the number one female player from April 2022 to September 2023. Despite losing that title, świątek continued to play excellent tennis and ranked second among women to enter the 2025 US Open.

Entering Thursday, Lamens never made it past the second round of the Grand Slam. After failing to advance past the qualifying round in eight different Grand Slams, Lamens reached the second round at the 2025 Australian Open. She followed suit with her first defeat at the 2025 French Open.

Although Lamens failed to advance past the second round at the US Open on Thursday, her nearly victory over świątek will be the best match of Lamens’ professional career so far.

After early horrors on Thursday, Schwittuk aims to return to orbit on Friday, where he is scheduled to face Anna Karinskaya in the third round on Friday.
