Manchester United were able to rekindle a search for mid-range reinforcements in January, with journalist Miguel Delaney suggesting that Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia has emerged as a potential target.
The Red Devils endured the frustration near the summer transfer window and failed to land the midfielder despite clear intentions from the club’s hierarchy.
United were pursuing Brighton’s Carlos Valleva, but negotiations collapsed later in the window, leaving Reuben Amorim without the additional midfield options they wanted.
On the deadline day, United’s only notable addition came in the form of goalkeeper Senne Ranmen.
Due to continued uncertainty regarding current look at the shape of the keeper, new goalkeepers were a club’s priorities at the final stage of the transfer window.
Man United is still looking for a new midfielder
However, the middle part remains an urgent concern. Amorim has not kept his desire to strengthen in that department. Delaney also wrote in his internal football newsletter, noting that behind-the-scenes debate is already heading towards January.
He explained:
“Of course, the end of the window means the start of January speculation by businesses that were primarily not done.
“Manchester United still wants a midfielder. We hope United will return to Brighton’s Carlos Valleva, but some insiders are wondering if they’ll be able to trade Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia.”
Romeo lava to Old Trafford?
Lavia, who joined Chelsea from Southampton in 2023, continues to receive high praise despite enduring the difficult injury spell at Stamford Bridge.
Brighton’s Valleva remains firmly on the radar, but the potential for lavia’s moves represents a bold attitude from the Red Devils, especially given Chelsea’s reluctance to strengthen their direct rivals.
It may depend heavily on how the Belgian season unfolds in West London, but his name is solid in the conversation as United are planning their next step.
