Sergio Garcia will not play the Irish Open after the Ryder Cup omission

Sergio Garcia has withdrawn from this week’s Irish Open and told Golf Magic that his stab wounds that he would not be selected for the Ryder Cup led to his decision.

The Spaniard was not among Captain Luke Donald’s team Europe’s massive pick ahead of his showdown with the US at Beth Page Black later this month.

Donald’s decision was not a major surprise. Garcia only made one top-10 finish in the last eight LIV golf events of the 2025 season.

However, according to the best rider cup point getter of all time and 10 participants, it still left some stab wounds.

“I felt like I was really looking forward to being part of that team, so mentally, I felt like I was kind of tough (to play in the Irish open),” Garcia told Golf Magic.

“I didn’t want to go there, and I didn’t want to be fully involved in tournaments or anything like that, so I decided to take a little break and spend some time with my family, do some other things besides golf, do a bit of a reboot and recharge the battery.”

One of them was to visit the US Open – Tennis Edition as Garcia saw countryman Carlos Alcaraz defeated Gili Lehecca in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

After the victory, Alcaraz said on Wednesday he will be playing golf with 2017 Masters champion Garcia.

“He has to give me at least 10-15 shots,” Alkaraz said. “That’s great. I’m not that good, Sergio, come on.”
