How McLaren sets a constructor’s record in Baku

McLaren is able to close the 2025 F1 Constructors championship title at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend, setting new records in the process.

The current leader celebrates the previous mark of confirmation of Red Bull’s early Constructors Championship in terms of the race remaining if they secured this weekend’s title. The dominant season of 2023 – There were still six rounds left when Red Bull confirmed the constructor’s championship when he won all but one of the 24 races.

To beat that mark, first and foremost, McLaren needs to surpass Ferrari nine points. That means a good finish is enough to guarantee the title, regardless of what Ferrari accomplished in the second. If Ferrari takes one-on-three or three in one, McLaren cannot mathematically secure a championship at Baku, but if Ferrari wins with one of the cars, the second and third are enough for McLaren.

Following the points situation against Ferrari, McLaren needs to ensure that they don’t lose points to the other two teams. Mercedes and Red Bull are both still mathematically in scope, but Azerbaijan’s outcome requires a big swing.

As long as McLaren doesn’t lose more than 12 points to Mercedes and 33 points to Red Bull, it’s not only outperforming Ferrari, but the title will be confirmed.

In Canada, there has only one team outperformed McLaren this season, and three have done so after Randorris retired due to contact with Oscar Piastri. On that occasion, Mercedes won George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in third place, scoring 40 points, surpassing McLaren by 28, while Ferrari and Red Bull each scored 18 points on McLaren’s 12.

From a driver’s championship perspective, only the top six of Piastri, Norris, Norris, Max Verstappen, Russell, Charles Leclair and Lewis Hamilton can win the title, but Hamilton is officially ruled out after Baku (or if Hamilton can’t win the race).
