  • Ranking signatures for Tottenham’s most expensive wingers
  • Why Wilson O’Dobert could be the next Stephen Bergwyn

Tottenham Hotspur spent a £30 million fee to sign Winger Mattis Tell from Bayern Munich during the summer transfer period after the loan spells in North London.

France U21 International spent the second half of last season on loan on Ange Postecoglou’s side, scoring three goals and providing one assist in all competitions.

The Spurs and former chairman Daniel Levy chose to make that loan deal permanent for £30 million despite the head coach change, offering him an opportunity to impress under Thomas Frank.

Unfortunately, the former Brentford manager doesn’t do well with the 20-year-old winger for his younger talent.

Tel scored two goals for France’s U21 during an international break earlier this month.

The French forward hopes not to join the list of expensive wingers who have not achieved their own success in North London.

Ranking signatures for Tottenham’s most expensive wingers

Tel, who can play as a leftist or as a centre forward, ranks among the top five signatures of the most expensive wingers in the club’s history, if transfer mark fees are considered.

As you can see from the table above, while Mohamed Kudus is at the top of the list for the summer signature, the son of the club legend Heungmin is at the bottom.

If you are pressed to rank these five signatures, your son must be at the top of the list. He scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists in 451 matches per TransferMarkt, captaining the sides to the Europa League trophy.

Meanwhile, Brennan Johnson scored the winning goal in the Spurs’ European final against Manchester United at the end of last season.

No matter what Wales International did before that, or what he was trying to do, he makes his signature just in that moment and costs him.

It’s too early to judge Kudos who just arrived this summer, but Lamela should be third on this list. The Argentine forward had a long life on his side as he scored 37 goals and 46 assists per Transhark Markt and 46 assists on 257 outings.

That’s why Stephen Bergwyn, who joined the bottom of the pile from PSV in 2020, remains. He only lasted for two and a half years with the club, but at that point the forward scored only eight competitive targets.

The Dutch International scored eight goals and provided 10 assists in Tottenham’s 83 appearances per transfer mark.

Bergwijn is an expensive flop on the wing, something Tel is trying to avoid repeats, and the club has a risky winger, the next version of the Dutch forward.

Tottenham swooped in the summer of 2024 to sign French winger Winger Wilson O’Dobert from Burnley for a £25 million fee, but he has yet to prove his worth on the pitch.

Why Wilson O’Dobert could be the next Stephen Bergwyn

Young forward was signed at a similar fee to Bergwijn, and his performance on the club’s field barely dismissed the two comparisons.

It is worth noting that Odobert suffered Hamstring’s injuries last season.

The 20-year-old winger, the same age as Tel, scored one goal and created one “big chance” in 21 appearances in the Spurs Premier League via Sofascore.

Thomas Frank gave the young man the opportunity to shine on his left flank, but the Frenchman completed with zero out of three dribbles, with zero out of five duels winning, no target key pass or shot at 72 minutes per sofa score.

Odobert, who was described as “incredibly raw” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is a costly signature for the Spurs, £25 million, and is not one of the five most expensive wide signs in the club’s history, so it’s not too harsh to expect more from the former Burnley man.

Statistics via Sofascore

As you can see from the table above, Tel, who took part in loans in January, offered more quality at the top of the pitch than his fellow French Under-21 International, who played in the Premier League last season.

These statistics suggest that Odobert is even less than TEL in the final third as a scorer and certainly as the creator of a wide or central verse.

Of course, the 20-year-old forward has plenty of time to turn things around and prove that the money he spent on bringing him from supporters and Burnley is worth it rather than becoming the next Burgwyn, who was a expensive flop for the wing.

However, the signs are not promising at this time. We can only determine what has happened so far, and Odobert hasn’t done enough on the pitch to suggest that his fate will always turn around quickly.

Therefore, the French winger is not the Tell, but the person at risk of becoming the next Bergwisin.
