Chelsea was tied to the moves of Manchester City goalkeeper Genrulugi Donnaruma during the summer transfer, but they decided not to chase him.
According to TeamTalk, they decided to leave the Italian international move because they believe they can sign Mike Maignan in the coming weeks.
Manchester United are also enthusiastic about Maignan.
Mainyan’s movement failed in the summer
The AC Milan goalkeeper became a free agent at the end of the season, and was heavily linked to Chelsea during the summer window.
However, the Blues were unable to secure an agreement with the Italian club. Chelsea were reluctant to pay the asking price to the international French goalkeeper. They believe he could be available at knockdown prices in January, and it will be interesting to see if they can get the deal done.
They need a Robert Sanchez upgrade, which has been a hugely overwhelming since joining the club. The Spanish goalkeeper was recently sent to Manchester United.
Mike Meignan is amazing
Chelsea will need to introduce upgrades and Mainyan will be a great addition. He is certainly one of Europe’s best goalkeepers at the moment, with the quality and experience that thrives in the Premier League. He was able to help Chelsea improve significantly. Signing a player of his quality at a bargain is the master stroke of the London Club. Maignan is labelled “elite” by Liverpool star Alison Becker.
It remains to be seen whether they will be able to get a deal across the line. They have a disappointing start to the season and they will appear to bouncing hard. Signing the right players in January could prove to be a wise decision.
Meanwhile, Milan will be under pressure to sell players in January. They wouldn’t want to lose him next year on a free transfer.
