Tokyo – Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz defeated No. 5 Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the title of this year’s eighth singles title.
Alcaraz’s 24th career single title was choked with a cleverly sliced drop shot winner, losing in two sets to Fritz in the Laver Cup Team event.
The Spaniards also improved their season record to the tour’s top 67-7 as they remained on the course due to the season’s No. 1 ranking.
“It’s definitely been my best season so far,” Alcaraz said. “It shows how hard I worked to experience these moments and achieve my goals.”
The final in Tokyo was Alcaraz’s ninth straight set since March, when he lost in 64 rounds at the Miami Masters since March. He was 7-2 in those finals, one of which was from Janik Thinner from Wimbledon.
“I didn’t start a year that was so good, an emotionally struggling year,” Alcaraz admitted.
Fritz employed a medical timeout after the first set of left thigh treatments that were tied during the switching of the second set.
