La. Monroe – Louisiana Monroe’s women’s tennis program was dissolved due to financial constraints of the university’s athletics department.

Athletic Director John Hartwell announced this week that the decision was attributed to “increased operational and infrastructure costs,” and ULM track and field will help maintain a minimum of 16 Division I sports for the NCAA, whilst helping to “balance budgets” and “balance budgets.”

“Canceling a sport is by no means an easy decision and it’s not something we should underestimate,” Hartwell said. “I know this can be difficult for a coach who has put a lot of effort into student-athletes and tennis programs.”

Hartwell said ULM would honor scholarships for those who wish to pursue a degree without transferring. He said his administration will also help tennis players who want to continue competing in pursuit of opportunities in other schools.

“We plan to prioritize student-athlete transitions as smoothly as possible,” Hartwell said.

Scholarship funds dedicated to women as a graduation or transfer of a female tennis athlete will be redirected to other women’s sports teams at ULM.
