  • Scott McTominay has performed well in Serie A
  • Barcelona will have to wait until summer to sign McTominay

Barcelona are reportedly considering a surprise move for Scott McTominay, who has been in good form at Napoli since joining from Manchester United last year.

According to TEAMtalk, the 28-year-old midfielder is on the shortlist of three players the Catalan giants are planning for next summer’s transfer window.

The report adds that Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also interested, setting up a potential transfer battle between the three clubs competing for European honors.

However, Napoli have no intention of parting ways with one of their key players midway through the season, meaning any potential signing will have to wait until next summer.

Scott McTominay has performed well in Serie A

McTominay’s transformation since arriving in Serie A has made him one of the success stories of Italy’s top flight.

The Scotland international quickly adapted to the pace and tactical demands of Italian football and became a key figure for the Napoli manager.

He has contributed directly to three goals in eight games so far this season, showing his growing influence in the final third.

For Barcelona, their interest in McTominay reflects their continued search for stability and physical quality in a midfield that has been lacking at times.

Despite developing a technically gifted midfield core in Pedri, Gabi and Frenkie de Jong, the Catalan club are keen to add players who can build up their physicality and provide defensive balance.

McTominay’s versatility, allowing him to play as a defensive midfielder or in a more advanced role, makes him an attractive option for manager Hansi Flick.

However, Napoli’s stance is clear: the club has no intention of selling McTominay in January.

The reigning champions are fully focused on defending their title and touring Europe, and see the midfielder as a key part of their plans.

Any negotiations will therefore have to wait until the end of the season, although Napoli could be more open to negotiations depending on their financial situation and the player’s wishes.

Tottenham and Newcastle are also monitoring McTominay’s situation closely. Spurs manager Thomas Frank reportedly wants to add depth and Premier League experience to his midfield, while Newcastle see him as a player who can complement Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton.

With competition expected from multiple teams in the Premier League, Barcelona may have to take drastic action if they are serious about bringing McTominay to Camp Nou.
