Old Rochester coach Chris Cave had modest hopes for the 2025 season, returning two of his top four golfers from a year ago.
“We knew we had some talented players coming into the season,” he said, referring to Peter Le Gassick, the Bulldogs’ 2024 Standard Times Golfer of the Year. “I didn’t know how they were going to step up and respond to the call.”
After going 15-0 during the regular season, the Bulldogs swept all the big tournaments, winning the South Coast Conference, Southern Section, and Div. Won three state championships.
ORR knocked out the Defense Division. On Oct. 27 at Blissful Meadows Golf Course in Uxbridge, third-place champion Ayr Shirley Regional won by eight strokes, clinching its second state title in the past four years after winning the district championship. Two titles in 2022.
“They were overjoyed,” Cave said. “I knew I could take a good shot.
“We got through a tough day. It was 35 degrees at 10am and the greens were getting brighter quickly, but the kids were able to stay calm.”
Jack Cherkovich and Luke Pierre both posted times in the 77-second range to tie for third place. Brady Mills had an 83 and John Bongiorno had an 86.
“We dropped from Division 2 to Division 3, so we were all new teams,” Cave said of the tournament. “Golf is golf. You have to play your ‘A’ game that day.”
“Old Rochester Regional High School has some really great golfers this year,” said Old Rochester Athletic Director Chris Carrig. “The Bulldogs were relentless on the rink. They worked hard, played hard and were really proud of all of us.”
The Bulldogs also won their division. The South Division champion earlier this month finished with 318 points, ahead of St. John Paul II (337 points) and Norwell (343 points).
Čerković shot a 76, finishing last among medalists at the event. Pierre scored a 77. Mills (82) and August Hebert (83) also contributed to the victory.
“This is the first time we’ve won sectional and state finals,” Cave said.
