Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee was reportedly told there was “no chance” of him leaving Old Trafford in January.

The Dutch international has only played five games for Manchester United so far this season and has never started for Ruben Amorim’s side.

This seems far from ideal for Zirksee, who has the World Cup coming up next summer and would like to play regularly at club level in order to make a good impression and join the Dutch national team.

Still, according to Samuel Luckhurst’s latest article in The Sun, Zirkzee will have to be patient and stay put.

catch off side It had previously been reported that Zirksee was likely to leave in January, but he stayed on through the summer due to the need to add depth to the squad.

Even if the 24-year-old hasn’t played much at the moment, he could be needed as a backup option at times this season.

For example, it is not yet clear how serious Benjamin Sesko’s injury is, but MUFC will also be without key players like Brian Mbeumo at AFCON from late December to early January.

This makes it even more important to keep Zirkzee around in what will likely be a frustrating situation for him.

Zirksee will need to do his best to make the most of this opportunity, even if a return to Old Trafford seems a long way off.

The former Bologna player has not scored for United in the Premier League for almost a year, but is certain to be shown the door next summer anyway.

It will be interesting to see how this story unfolds, but it looks like there could be quite a bit of back and forth before the transfer window finally opens in January.
