  • Liverpool’s terrible defensive record under Arne Slott
  • Liverpool’s defensive stats are a cause for concern, but a bit misleading, says Reds expert.

We all know things are going pretty badly for Liverpool this season, but if anything, it might actually be even worse than many of us think.

Remarkably, new statistics have revealed that Arne Slott’s side actually have the second-worst defensive record of any team in Europe’s top five leagues since May.

Once again, as the table below shows, only relegation-battling Wolves have conceded more goals than Liverpool in all competitions over the past six months, showing that the Reds’ problems didn’t just start at the start of this season…

Liverpool’s terrible defensive record

The image in the table is a little small, so I’ll show the top three again below for clarity. This is really a must-see.

This is a real surprise as Liverpool have top-class players in their backline in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, as well as two top goalkeepers in Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamadashvili, and it certainly shows that Slott’s coaching must be a big part of the problem.

Liverpool’s defensive stats are a cause for concern, but a bit misleading, says Reds expert.

How big a concern is this for Liverpool? The situation is certainly far from ideal for such a big club, but Empire of the Kop’s Reds expert Liam Toger said: catch off side to convey his thoughts.

Togher believes this is not great for LFC, but the raw numbers are missing important context.

“This statistic is a bit misleading, as 25% of the tally concerns the four games at the end of last season, when Liverpool had already won the Premier League, and there was a clear (and understandable) drop in the table,” Toger explained.

“However, 27 goals in just 18 games so far this term (1.5 goals per game) is clearly not befitting a team that holds the title of reigning Premier League champions, and the defensive solidity the Reds had for the majority of the 2024/25 season has evaporated.

“That’s down to a combination of fundamental individual mistakes, a lack of defensive cohesion due to summer personnel changes, the loss of midfield safety with Ryan Gravenbirch and Alexis Mac Allister out, and the loss of Alisson to injury and the presence he brings (and that’s no disrespect to Giorgi Mamadashvili either).

Liverpool fans, how worried are you about this? Or is it just an unfortunate event that can be fixed? Let us know what you think in the comments!
