SYDNEY — Two-time Grand Slam singles champion Lleyton Hewitt returned from retirement in doubles at the New South Wales Open Challengers Tournament with son Cruise on Thursday, but they lost in the quarter-finals.

Hewitt, 44, a former world No. 1 who won the US Open in 2001 and Wimbledon in 2002 and retired from singles in 2016, teamed up with his 16-year-old son Cruz to defeat Hayden Jones and Pavle Marinkov 6-1, 6-0 on Wednesday.

However, the father and son team lost 7-5, 6-4 to Dane Sweeney and Callum Patergill in the quarter-finals.

Lleyton Hewitt is Australia’s Davis Cup captain. Cruise Hewitt is one of three children he has with his wife, former actress Bec Hewitt.
