Alex Ovechkin, the star player of the Washington Capitals, is widely regarded as one of the greatest in NHL history. Last season, he made history by surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record with 895 goals, and now he has reached an incredible new milestone by scoring his 900th NHL goal during a game against the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night.

Ovechkin began his third season just under 900 goals but quickly increased his tally. He scored his first goal of the season on October 17th against the Minnesota Wild and followed up with his 899th goal on October 24th against the Columbus Blue Jackets. After a brief scoring drought of four games, he finally netted his 900th goal. Over his NHL career, Ovechkin has amassed 1,631 points, including 900 goals and 731 assists.

Throughout his 20-year career, Ovechkin has consistently demonstrated his scoring prowess, achieving 50 goals in nine different seasons. He holds the record for the most Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies, awarded to the league’s top goal scorer, with nine wins. On March 9, 2025, he joined an elite group as the 11th player in NHL history to reach 1,600 points. During the 2022-23 season, he scored 42 goals and has reached at least 41 goals in 14 of his 20 seasons. In the 2023-24 season, he made NHL history by setting a new record with 18 seasons scoring 30 or more goals, surpassing Mike Gartner’s previous record of 17 such seasons. Currently, his career spans 19 years.

Fan Take: Ovechkin’s achievement in reaching 900 goals is a monumental moment for hockey fans, highlighting the enduring greatness of one of the game’s all-time legends. This milestone not only cements his legacy but also inspires a new generation of players and fans, fueling excitement and passion for the sport’s future.
