Ja Morant of Grizzlies Banned from Raptors Clash Over ‘Toxic Behavior’

The Memphis Grizzlies have suspended two-time All-Star guard Ja Morant for their upcoming game against the Toronto Raptors, citing that his recent behavior was harmful to the team. In their latest game, Morant scored only eight points during a 117-112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers and appeared disengaged, even stepping away from the bench during a second-half timeout. When questioned about the game’s outcome, Morant deflected responsibility to the coaching staff, saying, “Ask them,” and later remarked that according to the coaches, he probably should not have played.

Despite playing more minutes in the fourth quarter than any other Grizzlies player and logging significant time in the second half, Morant missed all seven of his shots after halftime. This suspension adds to a history of disciplinary actions against Morant, who was suspended twice in 2023 for a total of 33 games and lost around $8.3 million in salary. He was also fined $75,000 last season for making a gun gesture celebration, which the NBA deemed inappropriate after previous warnings.

Morant is currently earning about $39.4 million this season under a five-year, $197.2 million contract and has played six games this season, averaging 20.8 points per game. The Associated Press initially reported these developments.

Fan Take: This suspension is significant for basketball fans as it highlights the ongoing challenges of managing talented but troubled players. How the Grizzlies handle Morant moving forward could set a precedent for balancing discipline, player development, and team chemistry in the NBA.
