Kevin Harvick Voices Disappointment in Denny Hamlin Following NASCAR Playoffs Drama

Denny Hamlin experienced a heartbreaking finish in the NASCAR Cup Series championship. Despite leading 208 laps at Phoenix Raceway and holding a comfortable 3-second lead with only four laps remaining, a late caution caused by William Byron’s crash changed everything. During the pit stops, Hamlin’s team chose to change all four tires, while Kyle Larson, starting five spots ahead, only changed two tires. This decision contributed to Hamlin dropping to 10th place, allowing Larson to clinch the Cup Series title, finishing third while Hamlin came in sixth.

Kevin Harvick expressed deep sympathy for Hamlin’s tough loss, especially given Hamlin’s dominant performances throughout the season and personal struggles. Harvick acknowledged how difficult the pit strategy choice was, noting Hamlin’s post-race comments that suggest he might question his future in racing. Hamlin, now in his 20th full-time NASCAR season without a Cup championship, had an impressive year with six wins, 14 top-five finishes, and 18 top-10s, finishing as runner-up for the second time in his career. This was also his first season working with new crew chief Chris Gayle, after six years with Chris Gabehart.

At 44, Hamlin remains a top competitor, with three third-place finishes in Cup Series titles and 17 top-10 finishes over his career. He has spent his entire Cup career with Joe Gibbs Racing and is co-owner of 23XI Racing alongside NBA legend Michael Jordan. Hamlin is tied with Harvick for the most wins in NASCAR history, boasting 60 victories.

Fan Take: This intense championship finish underscores the razor-thin margins that define NASCAR’s biggest moments, highlighting the critical impact of split-second decisions in pit strategy. For NASCAR fans, Hamlin’s continued pursuit of his first Cup title keeps the sport thrilling and unpredictable, promising more dramatic seasons ahead.
