Sabers Put Goaltender on Waivers Following Contract Termination

The Buffalo Sabres have put goaltender Alexander Georgiev on waivers with the intention of terminating his contract, as reported by Elliott Friedman of Sportsnet. Georgiev is anticipated to continue his career with Spartak in the KHL.

This decision is quite logical given the Sabres’ current goalie lineup, which includes Ukko-Pekka Lukonen, Alex Lyon, and Kolten Ellis, leaving no room for Georgiev, especially since he ranks below Devon Levi on the depth chart. Georgiev only played two games this season with the Sabres’ AHL team, the Rochester Americans, where he had an 0-2-0 record and a save percentage between .874 and .896. Prior to that, he posted a 15-26-4 record with a .875 save percentage and a 3.71 goals-against average over 49 games combined for the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks this season.

Following a short tenure with the Sabres, Georgiev is now set to bring his skills to the KHL.

Fan Take: This move highlights the intense competition for goalie spots in the NHL and underscores the challenges players face securing their positions. For hockey fans, Georgiev’s shift to the KHL signals the continued flow of talent between leagues, impacting the global dynamics of the sport.
