Gennady Golovkin Takes the Helm as Leader of New Olympic Boxing Federation

On November 21, 2025, it was announced that Gennady Golovkin, a former boxing champion known for participating in some of the sport’s most high-profile matches, will serve as president of a new organization set to oversee boxing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Golovkin was initially set to compete against Greek official Mariolis Charilaos in the world boxing presidential election in Rome, but after a review, he emerged as the sole qualified candidate. The Kazakh former middleweight champion was seen as the favorite after leading efforts to restore positive relations between the world boxing community and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which had previously considered removing boxing from the 2028 Olympics. Golovkin, an Olympic silver medalist from 2004, amassed a professional record of 42 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. The newly formed World Boxing organization, created in 2023 amid a dispute between the IOC and the International Boxing Association, has not disclosed reasons for Charilaos’s disqualification.

Fan Take: This development is huge for fight fans because Golovkin’s leadership could bring stability and credibility back to Olympic boxing, a sport that faced uncertainty and potential exclusion. His deep experience as both an Olympian and a pro fighter promises to bridge the gap between amateur and professional boxing, potentially revitalizing interest and quality at the Games.
