Denny Hamlin Left Stunned by Narrow Miss in Cup Victory

Denny Hamlin showed little emotion when reflecting on losing the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series title, expressing more shock and disbelief than sadness despite appearing to struggle with the championship throughout the race. At Phoenix Raceway, Hamlin lost a strong lead with fewer than three laps left due to a caution caused by William Byron’s tire blowout and crash. Although Hamlin quickly pitted for four new tires and restarted in 10th place, he couldn’t reclaim the lead, finishing sixth while Kyle Larson, who restarted ahead of him, finished second and claimed the championship.

Hamlin, 44, has yet to win a Cup title despite holding 60 Cup race victories, making this his fifth near-miss for the championship. Larson, who won his second Cup title, admitted the unusual feeling of winning under such conditions, acknowledging Hamlin’s dominance during the race. Hamlin described the sport as frustrating and unpredictable, where speed and talent sometimes don’t guarantee victory. His team owner Joe Gibbs and crew chief Chris Gayle shared their heartbreak, noting the tough decisions made during the race, especially the choice to pit for four tires, which ultimately didn’t pay off.

Despite his disappointment, Hamlin praised his team for providing a strong car and performing well in restarts, something they have struggled with during the year. He remained composed during the race but admitted that the final laps were where things unraveled. In trying to console his crying daughters after the race, Hamlin emphasized that life sometimes doesn’t go as planned and that important lessons come from such experiences. Looking ahead, Hamlin has two more full-time racing seasons ahead after extending his contract but admitted that his passion for racing needs some time to recover from this tough loss.
