UFC icon Chael Sonnen highlighted on the “American Gangster” podcast with Daniel Cormier how vital it is to avoid being trapped against the cage — a common tactic used by fighters from Khabib Nurmagomedov’s camp, underscoring the importance of Garry’s strategy.

Sonnen explained that the typical plan involves cornering the opponent, securing underhooks, controlling the body, entangling legs, and then taking them down to the mat. He praised Garry for successfully keeping Muhammad against the fence for 15 minutes and bouncing off when pressure mounted, suggesting that this approach could be effective against Makhachev.

As the debate about Makhachev’s next challenger heats up, the champion and his team appear keen on a title defense against Kamaru Usman, despite Usman’s struggles in recent fights. Other contenders like Ian Garry, Carlos Prates, and a returning Shavkat Rakhmonov, who is recovering from injury, also loom as possible obstacles.
