Islam Makhachev’s UFC Welterweight Opponents Face Tough Lesson in Tackling His Signature ‘Team Khabib’ Style

A new dominant force has taken the 170-pound UFC throne, making it extremely difficult for challengers to defeat him. Islam Makhachev reached the pinnacle of the lightweight division on the grandest MMA stage during the main event of UFC 322 on November 15th.

After giving up the lightweight belt to chase history in the welterweight category, Makhachev secured his place as the 11th UFC fighter to hold titles in two weight classes by decisively defeating Jacques Della Maddalena at Madison Square Garden. Following this victory, many predict that the Dagestani star will continue his impressive winning streak, tying the record with 16 consecutive wins in 2026, cementing his spot atop the pound-for-pound rankings.

Among those aiming to challenge him next year is Ian Machado Garry, who recently triumphed in UFC’s inaugural event in Qatar by beating Belal Muhammad, earning a shot at his first title. UFC icon Chael Sonnen highlighted on the “American Gangster” podcast with Daniel Cormier how vital it is to avoid being trapped against the cage — a common tactic used by fighters from Khabib Nurmagomedov’s camp, underscoring the importance of Garry’s strategy.

Sonnen explained that the typical plan involves cornering the opponent, securing underhooks, controlling the body, entangling legs, and then taking them down to the mat. He praised Garry for successfully keeping Muhammad against the fence for 15 minutes and bouncing off when pressure mounted, suggesting that this approach could be effective against Makhachev.

As the debate about Makhachev’s next challenger heats up, the champion and his team appear keen on a title defense against Kamaru Usman, despite Usman’s struggles in recent fights. Other contenders like Ian Garry, Carlos Prates, and a returning Shavkat Rakhmonov, who is recovering from injury, also loom as possible obstacles.

Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz is actively promoting the potential matchup with Usman on social media, but it’s still unclear if UFC President Dana White and the matchmakers will approve the fight.

Fan Take: This development is crucial for fight fans because it signals the rise of a potential long-term dominant champion, Islam Makhachev, whose reign could reshape the welterweight division’s landscape. The prospect of high-profile matchups like Makhachev vs. Usman promises thrilling battles that can elevate the sport’s excitement and global appeal.
