Diego Lopez Confesses He Believed He Deserved to Remain the Unbeaten Challenger Alongside Alexander Volkanovski

Months ahead of the official announcement for the rematch between Diego Lopez and Alexander Volkanovski, Lopez openly shared his thoughts on who should be the next challenger for the champion.

Back in April, at UFC 314, Lopez had his first opportunity to capture the undisputed featherweight title but was decisively outperformed by Volkanovski, who won via unanimous decision. Just a few months later, Lopez returned to face rising featherweight star Jean Silva in a highly anticipated bout within the division.

Before his fight with Silva, Lopez expressed that undefeated contender Lerone Murphy was the most deserving for a title shot, praising Murphy’s recent performances but also sympathizing with Mohsar Evloev. Not long before Lopez’s fight, Murphy made a significant impact by knocking out Aaron Pico, impressive enough to be considered for Knockout of the Year. Following Murphy’s win, Volkanovski expressed interest in facing Murphy next, an opponent he had yet to fight.

Despite Lopez’s victory over Silva dampening some of the excitement around Murphy’s win, Murphy still seemed positioned as the next title challenger based on Volkanovski’s preferences. However, UFC President Dana White later announced that Volkanovski would instead defend his title in a rematch against Lopez at UFC 325 in Sydney, Australia.

Murphy, frustrated by being passed over again for a title shot, voiced his dissatisfaction with the UFC’s decision, criticizing the promotion for prioritizing popularity over fighting merit. He argued that the UFC has shifted focus away from the best fighters and matchups, turning instead into a “popularity contest.”

Fan Take: This development is crucial for fight enthusiasts as it highlights the tensions between meritocracy and business decisions in MMA matchmaking. The rematch adds intense drama, but the sidelining of contenders like Murphy raises important questions about fairness and future opportunities within the sport.
