Lamont Roach Jr. Set to Clash with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Crews in Junior Welterweight Showdown This December

Lamont Roach Jr. has decided to stop waiting for a rematch with Gervonta Davis and is instead moving up to the junior welterweight division. On December 6, Roach will compete against Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz for the interim WBC title, according to ESPN. Roach previously battled Davis to a draw in March in a fight for Davis’ WBA lightweight title, a bout many believed Roach had won. Despite talks of a rematch, Davis’ camp shows little interest, as Davis is set for an exhibition match with Jake Paul in November. Rather than wait on Davis, Roach is taking on Cruz at 140 pounds, continuing his undefeated streak and answering public calls for him to become a world champion.

Cruz also has a history with Davis, having a tough match against him in 2021 and considering a rematch the following year, which never happened. After losing to Davis, Cruz captured his first world title by stopping Laurie Romero for the WBA 140-pound belt. He then lost the title to Jose Valenzuela via split decision but bounced back with wins, most recently defeating Omar Salcido to claim the interim title. The victor of the Roach vs. Cruz fight will be next in line to challenge Sabriel Matias, who secured the belt with a majority decision over Alberto Puello in July.

Fan Take: This matchup is a significant moment for fighting fans as it showcases rising talent refusing to be sidelined, emphasizing the hunger and drive in the sport. Roach vs. Cruz not only promises an exciting fight but also sets up new dynamics in the junior welterweight division, potentially reshaping the championship landscape.
