Shakur Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) and Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) are set to clash in New York on January 31st in a highly anticipated junior welterweight bout featuring two of the most prominent American boxers. The exact venue is still pending, but the fight will headline the “Ring 6” event in New York City and will be available for streaming on DAZN.

Lopez will challenge the undefeated Stevenson for the WBO and Ring junior welterweight championships, marking Stevenson’s debut at the 140-pound weight class. Stevenson currently holds the WBC lightweight world title and ranks No. 8 globally in the CBS Sports Pound-for-Pound Rankings. He aims to prove his skills by moving up a division and taking on Lopez. Stevenson last defended his 135-pound belt with a commanding unanimous decision over William Zepeda Segura in July.

“I’ve always welcomed challenges and pursued the biggest fights because I know my place among the world’s best boxers,” Stevenson stated in a press release. “Teofimo Lopez will learn firsthand when I take his title on January 31st and prove the hierarchy in this division. New York, prepare for an outstanding performance as I dominate the division for the fourth time in a row.”

On the other hand, Lopez has secured victories in his last six bouts and successfully defended his junior welterweight title four times, most recently with a unanimous decision against Arnold Barboza Jr. in May. “Duck, duck, goose! Ready for New York?” Lopez said. “Brick city in the concrete jungle, let’s get ready to fight! The takeover is real and here to stay. Making Boxing Great Again is my specialty. Shakur falls at 9.”

Both fighters are expected to be in top form, having competed only this past summer, and will likely enjoy strong hometown support in New York. Lopez hails from Brooklyn, familiar with fighting in his hometown, while Stevenson is from nearby Newark and last defended his title in Queens.

Fan Take: This matchup is essential viewing for boxing fans as it pits two of the best young American talents against each other at a significant weight class. The fight could redefine the junior welterweight division and heighten the sport’s popularity by showcasing top-tier competition and fierce rivalry in a major boxing hub.
