Mullins Hints at Bigger Breakthroughs Ahead from Anzadam

Willie Mullins is optimistic about Anzadam’s future following his impressive runner-up finish in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle last Saturday. The five-year-old, unbeaten before this race, is competing in a strong field featuring former champions Constitution Hill and rising star The New Lion.

Despite Constitution Hill’s early exit and The New Lion fading near the finish, Anzadam couldn’t quite overtake reigning Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace, but Mullins, with only five career starts under Anzadam’s belt, sees potential for growth. “He ran well and I’m confident he’ll improve from here,” said trainer Crossatton. “We may try different tactics next time. Overall, I was satisfied. He was in good form leading to the race, so I expect him to perform better around Christmas.”

Although Mullins faced some bad luck in Sunday’s Fairyhouse main event, Ballyburn showed promise in the Hutton’s Grace Hurdle. The seven-year-old, recently back to shorter hurdles after a tough start over fences, finished strong but just missed catching Tee Hoopoo, who secured his third Grade 1 title. Ballyburn is now favored by many bookmakers for the Stayers Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Mullins was also pleased with Mystical Power’s performance in the same race, despite being unseated after interference at the final hurdle. “I’m very happy with how both horses performed and believe they will keep improving,” he noted. “We are progressing well and hope to be ready by Christmas.”

This weekend, Mullins will enter two of his top horses, Majborough and Enagmene, in the Hillyway Chase at Cork. Enagmene, a seasoned runner with three Grade 2 wins, and Madziborough, who earned two Grade 1 wins last season and is stepping out of novice races for the first time, are both in strong form. “They’re both feeling great, and I hope they’ll perform well,” Mullins added. “Dino Blue will likely join us chasing the mare. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic day.”
