Three-Year-Old Shows Off Impressive Stretch at Saturday’s Mucho Macho Man Event

Trainer Jorge Delgado is gearing up for a pivotal challenge on Saturday with Lee Farms LLC’s Thunderchuck in the $175,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park. This One Turn Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds offers the son of Good Magic a chance to demonstrate his potential beyond sprinting.

Delgado explained, “We’re testing how far Thunderchuck can go, aiming toward a big prize on the Derby trail. The horse has been well-prepared, and we’re hopeful for solid results.”

The Mucho Macho Man Stakes, featuring the $175,000 Ginger Brew as co-headliner in the 11-race lineup, is the initial step toward the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1), the key 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Derby (G1) prep race on March 28 at Gulfstream. Other important preps include the 1/16-mile $250,000 Holy Bull (G3) on January 31 and the 1 1/8-mile $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2) on February 28.

Thunderchuck recently finished second to 4-5 favorite Hammond in the six-and-a-half furlong Juvenile Sprint at Gulfstream on November 22. Delgado noted, “Despite starting from the first post and being trapped on the rail most of the race, he finished strong behind a quality horse. With more experience now, I expect a better race and a favorable trip.”

Confident that the one-turn mile suits Thunderchuck’s capabilities, Delgado highlighted the horse’s favorable post position (No. 9) under jockey David Egan. “He handled the distance into the wind well last time, and with the good post and jockey, we’re optimistic about Saturday’s race.”

Also in the field, Baron Thoroughbred LLC’s Trip’s Promise, trained by Dale Romans, brings three races under his belt to this Mucho Macho Man Stakes. Romans said, “He’s a talented and intelligent athlete. Let’s see how high he can climb.”

Trip’s Promise won his six-furlong maiden special weight at Churchill Downs on September 26, coming from behind by a neck. Romans praised his recent performances, noting the colt stayed calm and competitive, preparing him well for this race, which should be fast-paced.

Romans also trains Trip’s Promise’s sire, a 2018 Fountain of Youth favorite and multiple Group 1 sprinter, highlighting the lineage’s speed and competitiveness despite limited progeny.

Corey Ranelli is set to ride Mucho Macho Man for this race.

Worthan Racing’s Commandment, the 7-5 morning line favorite, won impressively by over five lengths at Churchill Downs on November 1 in a seven-furlong maiden special weight. Trained by Brad Cox, Commandment overcame a slow start to dominate his second career race after learning from his initial run at Keeneland on October 4. Irad Ortiz Jr. will have the mount on Saturday.

P&G Stables LLC’s Kabul, trained by Jose D’Angelo, will make his second attempt at the one-turn mile. After winning a six-furlong maiden at Churchill in September, Kabul narrowly missed victory in his latest Gulfstream start. D’Angelo aims to help Kabul relax better during the race, and Junior Alvarado is booked to ride.

The field also includes the promising black-type thoroughbred Epic Summer, who is stakes-debuting after a strong six-furlong maiden win at Aqueduct in October, with Tyler Gaffalione riding for George Weaver.

Max Capacity, Blame Jasself, Roger That Dana, and Mr. Hooligan complete the competitive Mucho Macho Man Stakes lineup.

Fan Take: This race is a crucial early test for some of the most promising 3-year-olds on the Derby trail, showcasing their stamina, speed, and potential for bigger challenges ahead. For horse racing enthusiasts, the Mucho Macho Man Stakes is where future champions might emerge, making it an exciting preview of the sport’s next stars.
