At Kempton this Christmas, the Lion of Nemea Could Roar Back to Life

The Christmas Hurdle is among the potential races for Nemea Lion following his third-place finish in a lively edition of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle last Saturday. Kelly Lee’s dependable runner was a last-minute entry into the Gosforth Park Grade 1 race and, despite gaining an advantage from the notable falls of Constitution Hill and New Lion, the eight-year-old fell significantly short of second place, trailing Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace and the undefeated Anzadam. However, his £2,430 supplementary entry fee earned a return of £15,623.

Constitution Hill has claimed victory in the last three Christmas Hurdle events, but with his future unclear, Lee might consider taking a chance at Kempton on Boxing Day if circumstances are favorable. Lee expressed satisfaction with Nemea Lion’s performance, noting the challenge of competing at the same weight as Constitution Hill, who is rated 19 pounds higher.

She remarked on the long day starting at 4 am and the mixed emotions of witnessing such a strong competitor falter but remaining optimistic about future opportunities. Lee emphasized keeping all options open, initially anticipating races at Windsor and Fontwell from last season, but now considering pushing Nemea Lion further while progress is being made.

Nemea Lion is set to participate in the Christmas Hurdle, especially if conditions are soft; otherwise, Cheltenham’s Luerkeel Hurdle on New Year’s Day or a race at Windsor on the same day are possibilities. The horse’s focus will stay away from the three-mile distance after last season’s defeat in the Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham, as Lee prefers racing between two and two miles, ideally on a flat track, even if it means competing in France.

Fan Take: This update on Nemea Lion is exciting for horse racing fans because it highlights a determined competitor poised to challenge top contenders in upcoming Grade 1 races. Lee’s strategic approach to race selection and distance could influence how trainers manage versatile hurdlers, potentially shaking up the season’s key events.
