Under Xabi Alonso, the team had fallen behind Barcelona after three straight draws, but Wednesday’s triumph brought them within one point of the leaders.

Mbappé showcased his skill in the seventh minute by evading Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross-field ball, which had been intercepted by Unai Simon before reaching the Spanish goalkeeper.

Thibaut Courtois made key saves to deny both Alex Berenguer and Vinicius Junior before Eduardo Camavinga headed in the opening goal three minutes before half-time, assisted by a brilliant move from Mbappé.

As Athletic attempted to rally back, Mikel Jaureguizard tested Courtois with a long-range shot just after the restart.

However, Mbappé struck again just before the final whistle, curling a stunning shot from 25 yards into the bottom right corner, catching Simon off-guard.

Federico Valverde’s athletic effort was also thwarted by Simon in the closing minutes, but by then, Madrid had already solidified their dominance.

Data Highlights: Madrid Reaches 100 Wins, Mbappé Shines Again

Mbappé was instrumental throughout the match, with all four of his shots on target, significantly surpassing his expected goals (xG) of 0.44.

The French forward now boasts 25 goals in 20 games across all competitions, making him the top scorer in Europe’s major leagues (excluding the Club World Cup).

This victory marked Madrid’s 100th win in La Liga against Athletic (P189, W100, D37, L52). Only two teams in history have achieved 100 wins against a single opponent: Madrid against Espanyol (109 wins) and Barcelona against Espanyol (104 wins).

Fan Take: This victory is crucial not just for Madrid’s title aspirations but also for Mbappé, who continues to prove himself as a pivotal player. Such performances raise the excitement level in La Liga and could potentially influence the race for both the domestic and European titles as the season progresses.
