Sean O’Malley Shows Support for Ilya Topria’s Choice to Step Away from UFC

Ilya Topuria, the UFC lightweight champion, will not be returning to the Octagon anytime soon. Although he was expected to defend his title early next year, those plans have changed, leading to a surprising matchup planned for the start of 2026.

The new broadcast agreement with Paramount kicks off on January 24th with the interim lightweight title fight between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324. This fight announcement came soon after Topuria announced he would be taking a break.

Alongside Gaethje and Pimblett, Sean O’Malley is also featured on the UFC 324 card. The former bantamweight champ recently commented on the surprising circumstances that led to his spot in the main event.

Sean O’Malley has expressed understanding and support for Topuria’s decision to step away from fighting for now. Topuria’s hiatus is due to personal issues, which will delay his attempt to cement his legacy by winning a historic three-division title. Many in the MMA community, including Max Holloway, back Topuria’s choice. O’Malley echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of mental readiness and being free from personal distractions before entering fight camp.

O’Malley said, “If he’s dealing with a divorce or relationship problems, those need to be settled before training for a fight. You have to be mentally sharp and focused, and this isn’t the time for fight camp. I think he’s making the right call.”

At UFC 324, alongside O’Malley’s return, Topuria will learn who his next opponent will be once he is ready to compete again later in the year. Dana White confirmed that Topuria will unify the lightweight title by facing the winner of the Gaethje-Pimblett showdown when Topuria returns in late 2026. The champion has already thrown his support behind Pimblett to defeat Gaethje and settle the rivalry inside the Octagon.

Topuria has also hinted at competing at the UFC White House event on June 14th, which is expected to be a major card where he will likely begin his first title defense.

Fan Take: This delay in Topuria’s title defense adds an unexpected twist to the lightweight division, creating an intriguing interim championship storyline. For fight fans, it heightens anticipation and sets the stage for a high-stakes unification bout that could reshape the division for years to come.
