The Winnipeg Jets concluded a challenging six-game road trip with a narrow 3-2 shootout defeat against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night in a game marked by outstanding goaltending and key contributions from young talent on both sides. Winnipeg’s goalie Eric Comrie delivered his standout performance of the season, making crucial saves from the start through to the shootout, including dramatic stops during a mask removal and consecutive saves following a Montreal turnover.

The Jets leaned heavily on their top line once more, with Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor scoring all of Winnipeg’s goals. Late in the first period, Connor recovered a loose puck, skillfully maneuvered past two defenders, and assisted Scheifele, who scored to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Montreal equalized during a power play in the second period after Tanner Pearson was penalized for slashing; July Slavkowski scored with a sharp one-timer from the low slot. Winnipeg briefly regained the lead when a puck deflected off a broken stick into the net with help from Gabe Vilardi and Connor.

However, Montreal’s young stars responded, with Calder Trophy hopeful Ivan Demidov setting up Oliver Kapanen to tie the game at 2-2, pushing it towards the third goal. Comrie continued to be a solid presence for Winnipeg, blocking seven shots in the final period and five in overtime, but the Jets struggled to convert scoring chances beyond their top line. In the shootout, Cole Caufield scored the decisive goal for Montreal, securing the win.

After this tough loss, the Jets head back home and will face the Buffalo Sabres at the Canada Life Center on Friday.
