Zirkzee Unfazed by United’s Incoming Striker Signings

CHICAGO — Joshua Zirkzee expresses that Manchester United isn’t under pressure to sign another striker this summer.

After transferring from Bologna for £36.5 million ($48.7 million), he managed only three goals in his debut Premier League season at Old Trafford.

His challenges in scoring were mirrored by Rasmus Højlund, who netted just four goals as the team scored a total of 44 times over 38 matches.

This lack of scoring prompted United to pursue new forwards such as Mashwas Kuña and Brian Mbeumo during the summer transfer window.

Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko are among the potential targets, and Zirkzee indicated that he welcomes the added competition.

“That’s part of being at this club,” Zirkzee remarked.

“Honestly, I haven’t kept up with the news, but I’m not concerned because more competition is beneficial for the team.

“It’s all about helping the team; selfishness isn’t part of my mindset. My priority is supporting the team,” he added.

Zirkzee’s first season was marked by ups and downs, facing criticism after being booed for his performance in a December loss to Newcastle.

He did redeem himself by scoring a crucial penalty in the FA Cup against Arsenal, but he later missed another penalty that led to United’s exit against Fulham.

Additionally, Zirkzee dealt with a hamstring injury in April, unexpectedly returning for the Europa League final against Tottenham after missing several matches.

“I don’t believe I’ve shown my full potential yet,” he acknowledged.

“I think I was on the right track before my injury, and there’s always room to improve for all of us.

“(Reuben Amorim) is focused on scoring, so that’s what I need to concentrate on as well.

“I offer a different style, but ultimately, if you’re at the top level, you’ll score goals. That’s a fact. However, the main thing is that if Bruno scores 60 goals and we win, that’s what counts.”

Zirkzee is currently on the United team’s tour in the U.S., but missed the opening match against West Ham in New Jersey due to injury.

“I’m dealing with a minor injury that shouldn’t keep me off the field for long,” he said.

“I’m fortunate to work with an excellent physiotherapy team every day. It’s just a minor issue, nothing serious.”

Fan Take: This update matters to soccer fans as it highlights Manchester United’s proactive approach to strengthening their squad, which could significantly impact their performance next season. An increased competition among strikers may lead to more exciting matches and better overall results for the club as they aim to reclaim their place at the top of the league.
