Tampa Bay Lightning Secure Ryan McDonough with a 3-Year, $12.3 Million Contract Extension

The Tampa Bay Lightning have secured a three-year contract extension with seasoned defenseman Ryan McDonough, valued at $12.3 million. General manager Julien Brisebois revealed that McDonough, who will be 37 when the new deal kicks in, will have a $4.1 million cap hit through the 2028-29 NHL season.

McDonough played a key role in the Lightning’s Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021, and helped the team reach the 2022 Finals, where they were defeated by Colorado in six games. Following that season, he was traded to Nashville to immediately free up salary cap space. Thanks to the recent cap increase, McDonough’s cap hit will represent less than 4% of the team’s salary cap for each of the upcoming three seasons.

Currently sidelined due to injury, McDonough is among several key Tampa Bay players out of action, including their top defenseman Victor Hedman. Despite these absences, the Lightning continue to lead the Atlantic Division, boasting 16 wins in 26 games.

Fan Take: This extension shows the Lightning’s commitment to maintaining a veteran core that has proven its championship pedigree. For hockey fans, it underscores how strategic cap management paired with experienced talent can keep a team competitive over multiple seasons in today’s salary-capped NHL landscape.
