Edgecombe Teaches First Career Match Winner the Art of Doing ‘Whatever It Takes’

VJ Edgecombe showed true determination in his first game-winning moment. Unlike many rookies who might freeze during crunch time, the 20-year-old Sixers guard was quick to react when De’Anthony Melton blocked Tyrese Maxey’s shot. Edgecombe instinctively positioned himself perfectly and secured a putback layup with just 0.9 seconds remaining, clinching his first NBA victory. Despite the Sixers letting a 24-point lead slip away to the Warriors, they hold a solid 12-9 record.

Edgecombe’s clutch rebound wasn’t a coincidence—he averages 1.9 offensive rebounds per game, ranking second among rookies behind Hornets center Ryan Kalkbrenner. He has snagged at least one offensive rebound in 16 of 18 games this season. “I use my athleticism,” Edgecombe said. “When a shot goes up, people relax, but I try to jump in front of them because I can jump.”

During the postgame press conference, Maxey, who sat beside Edgecombe, humorously recalled Melton blocking his effortless layup at the buzzer and teased his close friend who recently returned from a torn ACL. Although Maxey was the night’s leading scorer with 35 points, Edgecombe’s overall stats were a mixed bag—10 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals, but also five turnovers in just 24 minutes as he’s still recovering from a left calf injury.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse praised Edgecombe’s instinct and potential, saying, “He has a nose for the ball and the game.” Edgecombe also showcased his defensive skill by stealing an inbound pass late in the game, a move fueled by his acute awareness and reading of opponents’ eyes.

Throughout the season, Edgecombe has impressed in high-pressure moments, playing 54 clutch minutes—defined as the last five minutes of a close game—where he shot 10-of-13, hit four 3-pointers, collected 11 rebounds, and distributed seven assists. “I just want to win,” he said. “I’ll do whatever it takes—whether that’s taking a shot, grabbing a rebound, or making a steal—because winning feels great and losing doesn’t.”
