Johann Zarco’s Latest MotoGP Contract: Secured… At Least for Now!

Johann Zarco, the oldest competitor in the MotoGP field, has not dismissed the possibility of continuing his premier class career beyond 2027. The French rider, one of four confirmed participants for the new 850cc bike’s inaugural season, aims to leverage his experience and embrace the “serendipitous opportunity” brought by the updated bike and tires.

At 35 years old, Zarco initially thought his switch from Ducati to LCR Honda in 2024 would mark his final MotoGP contract. However, the fresh challenge has reignited his motivation. As the leading rider for LCR Honda over the past two years, Zarco claimed a notable home victory at Le Mans and earned a dry-track podium at Silverstone, helping Honda secure the Suzuka 8 Hours title once again.

This success has led to a new two-year contract extension with HRC, which Zarco originally expected to be his last stint in the top tier. He shared, “When I signed the 2023 contract, I anticipated 2025 would be my final season. But it has given me renewed energy to consider doing two more years. Maybe even a third, who knows? This sport is very technical, and experience with the finer details is crucial. I still feel I can improve.”

Although continuing with LCR, Zarco’s forthcoming contract offers a valuable upgrade: he will receive new bike parts simultaneously with the official HRC factory team. He noted, “We’re negotiating with the Japanese to obtain a bike on par with the factory riders at the same time each year. Even if the factory team advances faster, we will adapt accordingly.”

Zarco concluded the current season 12th in the World Championship, just six points behind Honda’s Luca Marini, while fellow Honda rider Joan Mir placed 15th. In 2026, Zarco will welcome a new teammate, reigning Moto2 champion Diogo Moreira, who will replace Somkiat Chantra.

Fan Take: Zarco’s willingness to extend his career underscores the value of experience in MotoGP, especially amid technical changes. His continued presence and leadership could elevate competition and inspire younger riders, making the sport even more thrilling for fans.
