Last week saw more college football coaching drama beyond the Lane Kiffin situation at Ole Miss and LSU. Notably, two coaching changes are spotlighted in the upcoming American Conference championship game between the Tulane Green Wave and North Texas Mean Green. John Sumrall, who led Tulane to a 10-2 record and a No. 20 College Football Playoff ranking, has been appointed as the head coach at the University of Florida, already securing the nation’s No. 15 recruiting class. Meanwhile, Eric Morris, whose North Texas team is 11-1 and ranked No. 24, will take the helm at Oklahoma State University. Unlike Kiffin, both Sumrall and Morris will face their former teams in this critical game, which the winner is anticipated to clinch a playoff spot.

North Texas brings the most potent offense in college football, spearheaded by quarterback Drew Mestemaker, leading the nation with 46.8 points and 511.8 yards per game. Tulane counters with a solid defense that has allowed just 13 points and 344 yards over the last two games. North Texas is favored by 2.5 points.

Friday night’s lineup includes this marquee matchup but also four other college football games, 12 NBA matchups, and a full slate of college basketball games. Highlights include Troy facing James Madison in the Sun Belt Championship, and in the NBA, the iconic Celtics versus Lakers rivalry, along with the Mavericks taking on the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. College basketball features a top 20 showdown between Gonzaga and Kentucky.

Looking ahead to Saturday, the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes battle the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers in a pivotal Big Ten championship, with College Football Playoff implications and Heisman Trophy considerations on the line.

Fan Take: This coaching carousel and high-stakes matchups show how dynamic and interconnected college football and basketball have become, promising intense competition and storylines that could redefine conference power balances. For basketball fans, it’s a reminder that the drama of coaching decisions and player performances in football often sets the stage for future crossover excitement and development in college sports programs nationwide.
