Brazil’s Coach Casts Doubt on Neymar’s Availability for 2026 World Cup

Brazil’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has raised doubts about Neymar’s inclusion in the 2026 World Cup squad. Since taking over in May, Ancelotti has yet to confirm whether his former captain will be part of the team.

At a news conference in Washington following the World Cup draw, Ancelotti stated, “If Neymar deserves a spot and performs better than others, then he will be in the World Cup, plain and simple. But I don’t owe anyone any explanations.” Brazil is placed in Group C alongside Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland.

Ancelotti emphasized the need to consider other players too, stating, “When discussing Neymar, we must also mention other athletes. We should evaluate Brazil’s lineup both with and without him.” The final selection will be made after the FIFA games in March.

Neymar, who is 33, is still recovering from a torn ACL sustained during an October 2023 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. Despite this, he remains pivotal for Santos in their fight against relegation in the Brazilian Championship.

Recently, he netted a hat-trick for Santos while managing a muscle injury and is set to play again on Sunday against Cruzeiro. Ancelotti mentioned that Brazil lacks a “reference player,” a title Neymar has held since the 2014 World Cup on home soil.

“We have one of the best goalkeepers, top defenders, skilled midfielders, and forwards,” he noted. “We don’t want players seeking personal accolades; we desire players focused on winning the World Cup.”

Regarding Brazil’s group, Ancelotti feels confident they can win all their matches, stating, “Our objective is clear. We must stay competitive throughout the World Cup, aiming for the finals against strong opponents.”

Brazil last took home the World Cup trophy in 2002.
