Dana White Responds to Backlash Over Her Reaction to Tom Aspinall’s Eye Poke Incident

Dana White has clarified his previous remarks regarding the UFC’s heavyweight champion following the controversial incident at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi this past October. The main event between Ciryl Gane and Tom Aspinall ended in a no-contest after Gane accidentally poked Aspinall in the eye, leaving the first heavyweight title bout of the year unresolved.

The MMA community quickly voiced criticism toward Aspinall for not continuing the fight, a viewpoint that appeared to be echoed by the UFC president. However, detailed medical reports have since confirmed serious injuries to Aspinall’s eye, including soft tissue trauma, impaired eye movement, damaged ocular structures, persistent double vision, reduced visual acuity, and a minor fracture in the orbit.

In response to public and fighter reactions, Dana White emphasized during the UFC 323 post-fight press conference that he never made negative comments about Aspinall. He explained that while he isn’t a doctor, the medical assessments suggested Aspinall’s injury would take time to heal but was being closely monitored, and any remarks made were not intended to criticize the champion.

Despite this, some backlash against Aspinall’s public statements surfaced, especially after he accused Gane of intentionally cheating. Former fighter Ben Askren criticized Aspinall’s reaction as “whining,” sparking further debate within the community. Aspinall’s future fights remain uncertain due to the severity of his injury, while speculation grows around a possible interim title fight between Gane and Alex Pereira to maintain heavyweight excitement.

Fan Take: This incident highlights the intense physical risks fighters face and the importance of accurate injury assessments in combat sports. For fans, it underscores the drama and unpredictability of the heavyweight division and raises questions about sportsmanship and communication in the UFC’s high-stakes environment.
