In Sunrise, Florida, Carter Verhaig continued his impressive streak by scoring his sixth goal in six games, helping the Florida Panthers secure a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday, marking their second consecutive win. Uvis Balinskis contributed a rare goal, and the Panthers ended a rigorous stretch of three games in four days with a solid 2-0-1 record, finishing their home stand with a balanced 5-5-1 record in 11 out of 12 games played at home.

The Islanders, who had been on a three-game winning streak with a strong 7-1-0 record in high-scoring games, managed to net their ninth goal of the season. Rookie Matthew Shafer, the first overall pick, assisted on the goal, bringing his total to 21 points over 30 games. Balinskis scored his first goal of the season by shooting past the Islanders’ goalie through a screen, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead. This was only Balinskis’ seventh career NHL goal over 126 games, including playoffs.

Verhaig extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second period with an assist from Jeff Petrie. By scoring his 146th goal as a Panther, Verhaig set a new team record, moving past Steven Weiss, who ranks seventh all-time on the team. Verhaig has been in top form with six goals and five assists over his last six games. Seth Jones added a late goal, scoring for the second consecutive game and earning his first point as a Panther. The Islanders continue to struggle when scoring two goals or fewer, holding a 3-10-0 record in such games this season.

Looking ahead, the Islanders will host Las Vegas on Tuesday, while the Panthers are set to visit Utah State on Wednesday.
