MLB Buzz: Cubs Chase Zac Gallen, Mariners and Nationals Strike Deal, AL East Contender Targets Bo Bichette

The 2025-26 Major League Baseball offseason is underway, bringing a flurry of rumors regarding free agent signings, trades, and much more. Here’s a summary of recent developments.

The Phillies have shown interest in outfielder Cody Bellinger, who has been regaining his status as a top-tier talent over the past three years. As Bellinger approaches his age-30 season in 2026, there is expected to be strong demand for his skills. Jeff Passan reports that while the Yankees are the likely landing spot, the Mets also have some interest. For the Phillies, their interest in Bellinger might depend on what happens with free agent Kyle Schwarber; if Schwarber signs elsewhere, they could pursue Bellinger to fill the lineup gap.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are prioritizing bringing back third baseman Alex Bregman, a key player in their 2025 postseason run. However, Bregman has opted out and is available on the market. Should he leave, Boston might look to Bo Bichette as a replacement. The Athletic notes that some in the Red Sox organization view Bichette as a strong contender to fill Bregman’s role, potentially shifting him to second base. The Blue Jays remain Bichette’s most likely destination, but Boston could compete with regional rivals.

In other moves, the Mariners acquired left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer from the Nationals, trading catcher Harry Ford and pitching prospect Isaac Ryan. Ferrer, 25, has shown promise with a three-pitch arsenal and a solid ability to generate ground balls. Ford, at 22, was once a top-100 prospect but faces tough competition for playing time behind Cal Lowry in Triple-A. Ford batted .283/.408/.460 with 16 homers and 7 steals last season and could take on catching duties from Keibert Ruiz, who remains under contract through 2030 despite recent struggles.

The Cubs are reportedly pursuing veteran right-hander Zac Gallen to bolster their starting rotation. Gallen, 30, had a disappointing 2025 season and may accept a qualifying offer or seek a one-year deal to improve his performance in 2026. Over seven MLB seasons, Gallen has posted solid numbers, including multiple top-10 finishes in National League Cy Young Award voting. He spent six seasons with the Diamondbacks before moving on in free agency.

Finally, speculation persists about Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos, who is declining offensively and owed $20 million through 2027. Castellanos has expressed willingness to learn first base if traded, but his diminishing offensive production limits his market appeal.

Fan Take: This offseason is shaping up as a pivotal moment for several teams looking to rebuild or strengthen their rosters. The movements of key players like Bellinger, Bregman, and Gallen could influence team dynamics and playoff races, keeping fans eagerly watching for the impact these changes will have on the 2026 season.
