Anthony Joshua Shows His Versatility Beyond Power in Rematch Against Boxer He Shockingly Knocked Out

Anthony Joshua has made a strong comeback following his first professional defeat in December 2019. Six months prior, Andy Ruiz stunned the boxing world by knocking Joshua out, marking one of the sport’s biggest upsets. Joshua was knocked down four times before ultimately losing via a seventh-round TKO in his debut fight in the U.S.

For his rematch, Joshua adopted a fresh strategy to reclaim the WBA (super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles. The British boxer leaned on the fundamentals that earned him Olympic gold in 2012, avoiding a slugfest and instead focusing on discipline, a strong jab, and lateral movement. This approach led to a decisive victory in Saudi Arabia, with judges scoring 118-110, 118-110, and 119-109 in his favor. Joshua reflected on his journey by saying, “The first time was so great that I had to do it twice,” emphasizing his humility in both defeat and triumph.

After a challenging knockout loss in September 2024 against Daniel Dubois, who dominated Joshua before finishing him in front of 96,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, Joshua has chosen a different path this time. Instead of rushing into a rematch, he will face Jake Paul in Miami on December 19th. Paul, a YouTuber-turned-boxer, holds a 12-1 record mostly against smaller, older opponents, but Joshua represents a significant step up in both competition and weight class.

Despite Paul’s accomplishments, Joshua’s power could end the fight early, and his skill set is capable of controlling all eight rounds if necessary. This fight marks Joshua’s return to the ring after a break and promises to be an intriguing matchup for fans.

Fan Take: Anthony Joshua’s return and upcoming bout with Jake Paul is highly significant for fight enthusiasts, blending boxing’s traditional heavyweight power with the growing crossover appeal of celebrity boxing. This matchup could either reaffirm the dominance of professional boxing or signal a shift in the sport’s evolving entertainment landscape.
