The 2028 British Open will be held in July, away from the usual tournament schedule, to avoid a conflict with the Los Angeles Olympics.

The major tournament has traditionally been held on the third Friday of July, but it was moved to August because it coincides with the Olympic Games, which run from July 14 to July 30.

The venue for the 156th British Open has not yet been decided, but the tournament is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, August 6th. Royal Birkdale will host next year’s event, with plans to return to the Old Course at St. Andrews in 2027.

“We have decided to work with our stakeholders and partners to agree an alternative date for the Major Championship in 2028 to coincide with the Olympic golf competition,” said Mark Darbon, CEO of the R&A.

“We appreciate the constructive discussions with all concerned and believe that clarifying dates now will help plan the global golf calendar in 2028. We can also confirm that The Open will return to its normal mid-July date in 2029.”

Scottie Scheffler won his first Claret Jug at Royal Portrush and was crowned Champion Golfer of the Year.

In 2028, the AIG Women’s Open and Senior Open are also scheduled to be held in August. Three golf medal events will be held in Los Angeles, adding a new mixed team format to the men’s and women’s Olympic individual tournaments.
