The 2025 NBA Cup quarterfinals wrapped up on Wednesday with the Western Conference claiming half of the victories. As anticipated, the Oklahoma City Thunder comfortably outplayed the Phoenix Suns, improving their season record to 24-1 and matching the league’s all-time record with 25 consecutive wins. The San Antonio Spurs, meanwhile, impressed with a strong offensive display, pulling off a surprising upset over the Los Angeles Lakers.

In the Eastern Conference matchups on Tuesday, the Orlando Magic overcame a 15-0 deficit to beat their in-state rivals, the Miami Heat. The New York Knicks, showing strong momentum, dominated the second quarter to surpass the Toronto Raptors, securing their eighth win in nine games. The NBA Cup semifinals are set for Saturday in Las Vegas, featuring the Knicks versus Magic at 5:30 p.m. ET and Spurs facing the Thunder at 9 p.m. ET, both broadcast on Amazon Prime.

Looking back at the quarterfinals, the Thunder remain the team to beat, maintaining their status as defending champions with a commanding 23-1 record that intimidates any challengers. Their 49-point win over the Suns—the largest margin so far this season—emphasizes the wide gap between them and their competition.

On the other hand, rookie Stephon Castle has emerged as a standout player for the Spurs. Despite being overlooked by some after winning Rookie of the Year last season, Castle showed his worth with a season-high 30 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists in their win over the Lakers, proving to be a crucial part of the Spurs’ future.

The Lakers’ defense faltered significantly in their quarterfinal loss, ranking 21st in defense and failing to contain the Spurs’ aggressive offense. With 132 points allowed and poor resistance on fast breaks, the Lakers must improve their defense to remain a contender in the Western Conference, even though their offense remains potent.

The Knicks are quietly gaining attention, having won eight of their last nine games and closing the gap on the Eastern Conference leaders. Their recent win over the Raptors highlights why they are favorites to win the East despite their second-place standing. The upcoming semifinals could offer the Knicks a chance to solidify their presence and vie for a trophy in a season-starved franchise.

Orlando’s Desmond Bane has also shone, proving his worth after a rocky start with the Magic by scoring 37 points in an important win. Meanwhile, the Suns’ Grayson Allen struggled post-injury and was ejected during their heavy loss to the Thunder, a moment that further hampered his reputation.

Fan Take: This NBA Cup quarterfinal recap highlights a shifting landscape in the league, with powerhouse teams like the Thunder asserting dominance and rising stars like Stephon Castle and Desmond Bane making their mark. For basketball fans, this signals an exciting mix of established excellence and new talent, suggesting a thrilling season ahead that could redefine the balance of power in the NBA.
