Epsom Revamps: Derby Prize Money Boosted in Exciting New Changes

The Jockey Club has revealed significant updates for the 2026 Betfred Derby Festival, including the increase of the Premier Classic prize fund to £2 million. Several modifications have been made to the two-day event, such as moving the Coolmore-sponsored Coronation Cup to Saturday and doubling its prize money to £1 million. Racegoers will now benefit from free parking, and those under 18 accompanied by an adult will receive free general admission.

These changes are the result of a six-month review, though reverting to a Wednesday derby was not seriously considered. Epsom General Manager Jim Allen emphasized the importance of continually enhancing the festival experience to uphold the event’s world-class reputation and to engage the local community and British horse racing enthusiasts. New initiatives include free general admission for under-18s, complimentary hospitality and dining for children under 12, and discounts for teenagers aged 12 to 17.

With the increased prize money, even horses finishing as low as 10th place will earn prize shares, expanding from the previous limit of 6th place, and last year’s 72-hour declaration window will become a permanent feature. These efforts come amid a broader push to attract more attendees and participants to horse racing events, especially after declines caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival will also introduce a new fan and family zone called Derbyfest in the heart of the Hill, offering free entry and activities designed to engage local communities and younger audiences, operated in partnership with renowned sports promoter Queensberry. Additionally, areas like Galileo’s will offer live entertainment, a new trackside experience named 1780 will provide glass-fronted views beneath the winning post, and Champions Seating will offer free elevated bleacher seating along the final furlong of the hill.

Aidan O’Brien, the most successful trainer in Derby history, voiced his continued support, emphasizing the Derby’s central role in racing plans from breeding to training and calling it the race he most wants to win.

Fan Take: This boost in prize money and enhanced festival experience is a game-changer for racing fans, signaling a fresh commitment to tradition while embracing the future. It could help revitalize interest in horse racing, drawing in younger audiences and ensuring the sport remains vibrant and celebrated for generations to come.
