The New York Liberty have taken a significant step in their offseason by officially naming Chris DeMarco as their new head coach. During his introductory press conference, DeMarco shared his enthusiasm for the role, emphasizing that the Liberty was an ideal match for him.

“I did some research and it was clear this was a fantastic opportunity within the WNBA,” DeMarco said. “The Liberty is a respected championship franchise, and that’s exactly what I wanted. That’s why I’m here.”

Although DeMarco is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors, he is already deeply invested in preparing for his new role with the Liberty. “In my spare time, I’ve been diving into all the Liberty resources,” he explained. “I used to be a fan, but now I have to shift into a coaching mindset, so there’s a lot to study about the WNBA’s history.”

DeMarco’s first public outing as the head coach was well-supported by key players such as Sabrina Ionescu, Bethonia Rainey-Hamilton, Isabelle Harrison, and Nyara Sabally, who were present at the press conference. New York’s general manager Jonathan Kolb also expressed strong optimism about DeMarco’s impact, highlighting his 13 years of coaching experience and four NBA championships with the Warriors as significant assets.

“Chris brings a unique blend of strategic insight, emotional intelligence, and relentless effort,” Kolb noted. “This aligns perfectly with what our players need.”

DeMarco intends to remain in California until January before relocating to New York to start his offseason responsibilities with the Liberty.

Fan Take: This appointment is exciting for WNBA followers because DeMarco’s extensive NBA experience could introduce fresh strategies and heightened professionalism to the league. His leadership might boost the Liberty’s competitiveness and elevate the overall profile of women’s basketball.
