Three Underrated MLB Free Agents the New York Mets Must Pursue After a Quiet Winter Meetings

If you’re a fan of the New York Mets, you might have been disappointed by the lack of major roster upgrades at the 2025 MLB Winter Meetings, especially seeing promising first baseman Pete Alonso and star closer Edwin Diaz leave Queens. However, the winter meetings are just one phase of the off-season, and there are still many impactful free agents available who could strengthen the team.

Here are three free agents the Mets should consider signing:

  1. Kenley Jansen
In 2025, Jansen posted a 2.59 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 57 strikeouts, and 29 saves over 59 innings, outperforming his replacement by 2.4 wins. With the Mets having lost Diaz and two other reliable relievers to free agency, their bullpen is in urgent need of reinforcement. At 38, Jansen remains one of the top closers in baseball, consistently shutting down opponents with his cutter. Adding Jansen would secure the closer role and allow Devin Williams, signed to a three-year, $51 million deal, to shift to a setup position after a challenging 2025 season (including a 4.79 ERA with the Yankees). Despite these additions, the Mets’ bullpen still needs more depth, as their 2025 stats put them mid-tier in MLB bullpen performance.

  2. Cody Bellinger
Bellinger had a strong 2025 season, hitting 29 home runs with 98 RBIs and a .272/.334/.480 slash line, resulting in a 5.1 WAR. The Mets currently have only Juan Soto confirmed as a starting outfielder for next season after trading or losing several key players. Bellinger’s versatility will be a major asset; he can play both the outfield and first base, filling the gap left by Alonso who signed with Baltimore for five years and $155 million. His powerful left-handed bat and postseason experience make him a valuable addition for a team seeking impact hitters across multiple positions.

  3. Framber Valdez
Valdez ended 2025 with a 3.66 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 187 strikeouts in 192 innings. Though coming off a somewhat down year, Valdez remains a top left-handed starting pitcher and proven ace capable of pitching deep into games using his effective three-pitch mix. The Mets’ 2025 starting rotation struggled significantly, ranking near the bottom in key pitching stats. Valdez, a two-time All-Star with postseason experience, could anchor the rotation. Alongside other potential contributors and possibly signing another top starter, Valdez’s presence could be central to returning the Mets to playoff contention.

Fan Take: This offseason’s moves are crucial for the Mets as they rebuild after losing key players. Securing proven talent like Jansen, Bellinger, and Valdez could revitalize the team and bring excitement back to Queens, signaling a brighter future not just for Mets fans but for the competitive landscape of MLB.
