Caitlin Clark, arriving at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, alongside some of the biggest names in American women’s basketball such as Cameron Brink, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese, spoke out on the WNBA’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) talks during a media event on December 12. Clark, who has played a significant role in boosting the league’s visibility and marketability in recent years, emphasized the critical importance of these negotiations for the WNBA’s future. She highlighted that while players will continually fight for their rightful benefits, the true value of the league is ultimately driven by fans’ passion for watching the game.

Clark stated, “This is the most significant moment in WNBA history, and it can’t be mishandled. We, the players, will fight for everything we deserve, but basketball is what the fans want to see. Producing great basketball is how the league earns its revenue and builds its audience. This process is a business negotiation that calls for give-and-take from everyone involved.”

She further explained that she is making an effort to understand the complexities of the negotiations and stressed the importance of starting the season in the spring, which benefits both players and fans. Clark noted, “We’re starting to grasp the key issues, and it’s clear how crucial this is. I want to contribute as much as I can and am educating myself as best as possible. Though it’s tough to speak for every member, there are points where we can say ‘we definitely deserve this’ and others where compromise is necessary. This is the most pivotal moment in WNBA history, and it’s vital we find a way to compete next season for the fans and those who paved the way before us.”

As of December 14, talks between the league and the WNBA Players Association remain distant from an agreement, though some progress has been made on regulations for the upcoming WNBA Expansion Draft, which cannot happen until a new CBA is finalized. Meanwhile, Clark is continuing her off-season training and preparing with Team USA for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, alongside gearing up potentially for a WNBA season with the Indiana Fever.

Fan Take: This update highlights how crucial the ongoing CBA negotiations are for the WNBA’s growth and stability. For fans, it’s a reminder that securing a fair and timely agreement will ensure top-tier basketball remains on the court and the league continues to thrive.
