Kings Face Familiar Struggle, Fall Again in Overtime to Calgary

The Los Angeles Kings had an opportunity to improve their record to 14-8-9 on Saturday night against the Calgary Flames, who entered the game at 13-16-4. However, the Kings left Crypto.com Arena with another disappointing loss, continuing a frustrating trend that has plagued their season. Anze Kopitar initially appeared to have scored the game-winning goal in overtime, but it was disallowed due to an obvious kicking motion, giving Calgary a chance to win. Moments later, Calgary center Morgan Frost capitalized on the opportunity, netting the overtime winner to secure a 2-1 victory over the Kings. Despite strong goaltending from Darcy Kuemper and an early lead, Los Angeles struggled to close out the game, now carrying a 4-6-4 home record.

Midway through the first period, Adrian Kempe put the Kings ahead with his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Alex Laferrière. But the momentum didn’t carry through to their offense. While the Kings played solid defense and Kuemper made an impressive 36 saves, Calgary fought back in the second period. The Flames tied the game at 1-1 thanks to a goal from Kevin Fiala, who capitalized on some lapses by the Kings, including fatigue and poor puck management.

Both teams had opportunities to score during power plays, but the Kings went 0-for-2, and the Flames finished 0-for-4. Kuemper’s stellar performance kept Los Angeles in the game, often rescuing the team from potentially game-ending mistakes. Kopitar acknowledged post-game that Kuemper’s effort earned them a point, but stressed the need for the team to improve their offense.

In overtime, Calgary dominated the three-on-three play, with Frost eventually sealing the win. The Kings, despite winning 54 percent of faceoffs, gave away possession 17 times, allowing Calgary more control of the puck. This loss highlights a recurring pattern for Los Angeles — starting either too slow or losing leads — resulting in overtime defeats. Until they address these issues, losses and missed points will continue to pile up, especially in a tightly contested Western Conference.

Fan Take: This game reveals the Kings’ ongoing struggle to close out matches, underscoring the thin margin between victory and defeat in the NHL. For hockey fans, it’s a reminder of how crucial consistency and composure are — teams that can’t solve these problems risk falling behind in the playoff race, making every effort on both ends of the ice vital for future success.
