Victor Wembanyama made a triumphant return from injury to lead the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Cup Finals by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder. The French star, sidelined for 12 games due to a left calf injury, contributed 22 points in a thrilling 111-109 win over the reigning NBA champions in Las Vegas.

Wembanyama also grabbed nine rebounds, dished out two assists, and blocked two shots in 21 minutes on the court, marking only the Thunder’s second loss in 26 games this season. Reflecting on the victory, the 21-year-old said, “We knew time was limited, so we had to make every moment count. Beating a team like this shows the power of teamwork and how meaningful this win is.” His teammate Devin Vassell added 23 points in the game.

The NBA Cup is an annual mid-season tournament, with all games except the final also counting toward regular season records. The Thunder, who lost last year’s finals to the Milwaukee Bucks and had a 16-game winning streak snapped by the Spurs, had been off to a strong start, going 24-1 in their first 25 games, tying one of the best season starts in NBA history. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the current NBA MVP, led the Thunder in scoring with 29 points.

In the finals, San Antonio will face the New York Knicks, who defeated the Orlando Magic 132-120. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with a season-high 40 points, supported by Karl-Anthony Towns who scored 29. Towns commented, “We stuck to our game plan and played true Knicks basketball.”

Fan Take: Wembanyama’s return shakes up the NBA as his impact instantly revitalizes the Spurs and adds fuel to one of the season’s most exciting narratives. For basketball fans, this sets the stage for a thrilling finals showdown, showcasing the rising talent and competitive spirit that will shape the league’s future.
