Hernández Questions LeBron James’ Future as Lakers Show Strong Commitment to Luka Doncic

Near the end of a press conference discussing the Lakers’ contract extension, Luka Dončić shared details about the training regimen that helped him shed an impressive amount of weight. After Dončić spoke about avoiding weightlifting and basketball during this process, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of the support system around him.

Pelinka praised Dončić’s trainer Anže Macek and physiotherapist Javier Barrio, highlighting their seamless collaboration with the Lakers staff, and also acknowledged Dončić’s agent Bill Duffy and business manager Lara Beth Seager. These remarks went beyond mere compliments—they signified a strong commitment and loyalty.

After Dončić was traded to the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks last season, reports surfaced about friction between his inner circle and Dallas. Pelinka’s comments implicitly signaled that the Lakers are providing the support Dončić didn’t get before, now firmly making the Lakers his team.

This commitment became official on Saturday with the Lakers signing 26-year-old Dončić to a three-year, $165 million contract extension. The press conference concluded with seven Lakers players and coach J.J. Redick joining Dončić for a photo as he held up his jersey. Several players, including center Deandre Ayton and guard Marcus Smart, were personally recruited by Dončić to join the Lakers.

Dončić is now officially the centerpiece of the Lakers franchise, a clear direction from the moment Pelinka acquired him. However, this also raises questions about what this means for LeBron James’ role on the team moving forward.

Notably absent from the press event was Austin Reaves, and LeBron James also did not attend. However, James has secured a contract for another season beyond Dončić’s extension. Known for his influential presence, James has even influenced the team’s drafts, including when the Lakers picked his son.

The Lakers previously hoped Anthony Davis would succeed James as the franchise star, but that transition never fully materialized. Unlike Dončić’s recent extension, the Lakers did not emphasize Davis’s contract as much. James has not openly shared his feelings about these changes, but his agents expressed hope that the Lakers will build a championship-contending team aligned with his goals as he enters a later stage in his career.

At 40 years old, James’ contract includes a no-trade clause, giving him considerable say over his future. When asked about James’ perspective on the Lakers’ summer moves and whether he plans to retire with the team, Pelinka emphasized respect for James’ timeline and family, but did not provide a definite answer.

Dončić has now taken on the role of the team’s next big star. For the Lakers to fully embrace this new chapter, they must also address the future of existing stars like James—whether he remains in a supporting role or decides to move on remains to be seen.

Fan Take: This extension cements Luka Dončić as the Lakers’ cornerstone, signaling a potential new era for one of the NBA’s most storied franchises. Basketball fans should watch closely, as this move could redefine the dynamics of the league’s top teams and spark a fresh chapter in NBA history.
